(Emergency Broadcast Network) Electronic Behavior Control System
during my senior year in WMU’s graphic design program, i was turned on to this video by one of my instructors. it blew me away, shattered my ego — in a good way. this combined with some of Negativland’s work inspired me tremendously. i decided my senior thesis was to be “The Evils of Capitalism”. i began deconstructing ads, corporate messages and the like, studying the works of John Heartfield and other artists who used detournement. i went further than most students in their senior thesis. i decided i could not work in the corporate world, but wanted to remain in the underground, at the risk of being jobless and penniless — i could not work for an ad agency or design firm and take part in the manipulation of the masses. i wanted to smash this “plastic fantastic” culture that has been built around the lies and coercion of the major corporations. i wanted to destroy the “hypnotic trance” that media and advertising has on our population.
so i made numerous, subversive posters which i bound into a booklet, kind of like a manifesto, of how to break the spell of corporate mind control. but i still struggle with it, trying to communicate my ideas and thoughts. it gets garbled sometimes, and if you visit this blog at all frequently you can see that! i suffer from mania, what i like to call werewolfism. i get easily distracted by entertainment … “puppet shows”. we are all puppets. my goal is to be a puppet of That which Is. to help bring out the beautiful aspect of our lives in nature, in song, in truth. there is a Truth. there is an Ultimate Reality. and it aint found on the billboards or advertisements we are all bombarded by.
i hope to post more of my senior thesis work on this blog, as well as newer art that i have been working on. thanks for your understanding and encouragement. i’ve been getting quite a few hits on this blog and i appreciate your interest and comments. and i apologize for making any viewers feel uncomfortable or making anyone think i am out to get them with what i say, how i say it or the art that i produce. but remember, i am a werewolf, and i sometimes change into a serpent.
